Position Summary

Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across 3 campuses in the northeast of Melbourne and state-wide. Austin Health is world-renowned for its research and specialist work in cancer, liver transplantation, spinal cord injuries, neurology, endocrinology, mental health and rehabilitation.

An exciting opportunity currently exists for an enthusiastic and highly experienced Clinical Perfusionist to join our Clinical Perfusion Team.

The clinical perfusionist team within the Operating Suite provides a service to the Cardiac Surgery & Liver Transplantation Units and to other surgical units as required The Austin Perfusion Service has a strong commitment to professional support and education of staff and continuously ensuring our patients receive excellence in care at all times.

The Clinical Perfusion team also provides support to ICU for ECMO life support, (Veno/veno and Arterio /veno) cell saver and Intra-Aortic balloon pumping as required.

The Cardiac department performs approximately 400 cardiac procedures per year.

Details of position/position requirements

The Clinical Perfusionist, under the guidance of the Supervisor Clinical Perfusion, will be responsible for the delivery of expert clinical care and service delivery. Working as part of a small team, the Clinical Perfusionist will be responsible for perfusion and associated services to cardiac surgery and other disciplines as required.  

As an accredited clinical perfusionist you will be part of a dynamic team providing a full range of perfusion services to cardiac surgery and other disciplines as required including:

    • Heart lung machines
    • ECMO
    • Intra aortic balloon pumps
    • Cell saving
  • Works as part of a multidisciplinary team in conjunction with cardiac surgery, ICU and Dept of Anaesthesia
  • To be responsible for ensuring his/her own continuing professional development and overall performance in order to maintain expert clinical skills and advanced knowledge
  • Actively promote clinical research
  • Act as a clinical role model and leader for all members of staff and provide a highest standard of direct care to all patients
  • Participate in unit meetings and cardiac multi disciplinary meetings
  • Participate in cardiac audit
  • Participate  in surgical audit
  • Participate in mentor/ preceptor programs and orientate new staff as directed
  • Participate in a 24 hour on call service
  • Participate in organ donation and organ perfusion programmes as required
  • Perform cardio pulmonary bypass without supervision
  • Competently perform Intra Aortic Balloon pump therapy

Selection Criteria Essential: •Comprehensive experience in all aspects of Cardiac Perfusion •Masters in Science (Cardio Vascular Perfusion) •Bachelor Degree in Science or Applied Science or equivalent •Diploma in Clinical Perfusion •Certification in Clinical Perfusion with the Australian and New Zealand College of Perfusion
Desirable: Desirable but not essential for Performance in the Position – 5 years experience as a Clinical Perfusionist •Published research papers – available for review •A sound understanding of information technology including clinical systems, applications relevant to risk management reporting or as req
