Position Summary

Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across 3 campuses in the northeast of Melbourne and state-wide. Austin Health is world-renowned for its research and specialist work in cancer, liver transplantation, spinal cord injuries, neurology, endocrinology, mental health and rehabilitation.

An exciting opportunity currently exists for a Senior Fellow in Cardiac Surgery and Thoracic Aortic Surgery.

Details of Department

The Cardiac Surgery Department, as part of the Surgical CSU, is responsible for the provision of services within the specialty to patients across Austin Health.  The Cardiac Surgery Department, as part of the Surgical CSU, is responsible for the provision of services within the specialty to patients across Austin Health.  The Director of the Department is A/Prof Siven Seevanayagam. A/Prof George Matalanis is responsible for the comprehensive Thoracic Aortic Surgery Program and is acknowledged as a world-renowned authority in all facets of thoracic aortic surgery. 

The unit provides a sophisticated multi-disciplinary aortic surgery management meeting with participation of vascular surgeons and interventional radiologists. Opportunities exist for participation in endovascular procedures.

The cardiac surgery unit performs all types of adult cardiac surgery procedures, including minimally invasive procedures and complex valve repair procedures, with the exception of cardiac transplantation.

Located at the Austin Hospital Campus, the Unit is committed to the provision of high quality patient care and maintains an ongoing commitment to Undergraduate and Post Graduate teaching. Extensive research projects are undertaken within the department as well as part of multi-centre research initiatives. Also provided is a consultative service for other Units within Austin Health.

Details of position/position requirements

The objective of this position is to provide an Advanced Fellowship in Cardiac Surgery and Thoracic Aortic Surgery in order to:

Provide post fellowship experience in general cardiac surgery and thoracic aortic surgery

Provide support and teaching to resident and Registrar medical staff through direction and management of patients.

Support emergency general cardiac and aortic cases, in and out of hours.

Registered Medical Practitioner in the State of Victoria.

Fellowship of the RACS or overseas equivalent in Cardiothoracic or Cardiovascular Surgery.

Demonstrated experience in operative cardiac surgery. (Submission of official logbook summary essential)
