Position Summary

An exciting opportunity exists for a passionate and suitably experienced individual as a Renal Transplant Surgery Fellow at Austin Health for 2019.  This new fellowship position will provide further training in all components of renal transplant surgery.  An application is currently in progress for this position to be accredited as a training position.  Austin Health has completed renal transplantation since 1974, and over 1000 transplants have now been performed.  We currently perform approximately 75 renal transplants per year, including 20 live donor transplants.

Austin Health is the provider of transplantation surgery to several other services as part of the Victorian Kidney Transplant Collaborative (VKTC), which offers live and deceased transplantation surgery to non-transplanting Renal Hub Services including Eastern Health, Barwon Health, Bendigo Health and St Vincent’s.  Since 2013, Austin Health has provided adult donor nephrectomy surgery for paediatric transplantation at Royal Children’s Hospital.  Paediatric transplants are performed at the Royal Children’s Hospital, with 50 paediatric transplants performed in the last 5 years.

The Renal Transplant Programme at Austin Health is highly collaborative with surgical input and expertise drawn from general surgery, vascular surgery and urology units.

The unit has had a keen involvement with the Australian Kidney Exchange since its origins in 2010.  Austin Health also plays a highly active role in the retrieval of deceased donor kidneys, owing to the Statewide Liver Transplant Service being located at Austin Health.
