Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across 3 campuses in the northeast of Melbourne and state-wide. Austin Health is world-renowned for its research and specialist work in cancer, liver transplantation, spinal cord injuries, neurology, endocrinology, mental health and rehabilitation.

An exciting opportunity currently exists for an enthusiastic and highly experienced Research Assistant to join our Endocrinology Department Research Laboratory in a fixed term position with the possibility of continuing 6 monthly contracts.

The Endocrine Centre of Excellence is responsible for the provision of services within the specialty, to patients across the medical field. The unit is committed to the provision of high quality patient care and maintains an ongoing commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Research is a pivotal part of the department and is involved in a number of studies with collaborators nationally and internationally.

Details of position/position requirements

To provide scientific laboratory support to staff and students of the endocrine unit and to participate in research studies conducted by the endocrine unit.

To be successful in this role you must demonstrate/Key responsibilities will include:

· Participate in research activities of the Endocrine Unit.

· Assisting when required in the running of the Endocrine Unit research laboratory.

· Ensure that every effort is made to maintain the confidentiality of information about trial patients.

· Ensure the accurate collection, documentation and archiving of data.

· Use computers to maintain the database (Knowledge of Excel software is essential).

· Collation of statistics, data analysis and interpretation in conjunction with supervisors as required.

· Report writing including animal ethics applications, annual yearly reports and contribute to the preparation of grant applications and manuscripts for publication.

· Active participation in lab meetings, including presenting data and assisting in trouble-shooting technical issues.

· Assisting with ordering laboratory supplies, ensuring equipment maintenance and preparing and maintaining stocks and general lab maintenance.

Essential for Performance of the Position

· BSc qualification with Honours and / or relevant experience.

· Experience in a scientific research laboratory environment e.g. Small animal handling and surgery, molecular biology (i.e. Q-PCR, RNA/DNA extractions, Western blotting), biochemical assays, histological slide preparation and analysis, immunohistochemistry, fluorescent and confocal microscopy, microCT.

· Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as part of a team.

· Demonstrated ability to collect and collate information accurately and reliably.

· Good computer literacy, including word processing, databases, excel, use of statistical programs, the internet and graphics.

· Strong written and oral communication skills.

· Demonstrated high levels of self-motivation, organisational and time management skills.

· To be prepared to undertake training for handling infectious and potentially infectious tissues.

· Demonstrated potential for initiating and participating in collaborative research programs with the research group.

· Demonstrated potential to contribute to publications, grant applications and ethics applications in an appropriate discipline.

· Excellent interpersonal skills.

Desirable but not essential for Performance of the Position

  • Higher degree experience in the discipline of endocrinology.
  • Demonstrated capacity to supervise honours and postgraduate research if required and depending on qualifications.
  • Knowledge of general practical and ethical issues relating to the performance and funding of biomedical research.
