Position Summary

A new and exciting opportunity currently exists for an enthusiastic and highly experienced Mental Health Practitioner to join the North East Area Mental Health Service (NEAMHS)

The teams within NEAMHS are made up of highly passionate, experienced, supportive, collaborative and enthusiastic clinicians! A thorough working knowledge of the Mental Health Act (2014), the Carer Recognition Act (2012), and Chief Psychiatrists Guidelines Demonstrated knowledge of recovery and collaborative clinical practice are required with a minimum 7 years of experience in a relevant mental health setting.  Mandatory Qualifications - relevant professional qualification in a health related discipline (social work, occupational therapy).

The primary focus of this role will work to support registered clients of the North East Area Mental Health Service (NEAMHS) out of hours, when primary community supports (case management service) are not available. The position will work to support discharge planning for NEAMHS clients from inpatient units and other acute areas, such as Emergency Departments. 

This full time, fixed-term role (or part-time, either may be suitable) has been developed for a 12 month period to improve the access and availability of our clinical services in the community by providing a service after hours and on the weekend.  We envisage that this role will develop strong links with the Acute Psychiatric Unit, to assist with discharge planning processes during both the week and the weekend.

To be successful in this role you must demonstrate key selection criteria, some of which include:


  • Displays a clear understanding of the principle of recovery orientated practice and its implementation within a clinical setting.
  • A flexible, innovative team oriented approach to service delivery
  • Demonstrated experience and ability in community-based assessment and management of people with substantial and prolonged mental illness.
  • Knowledge of, and the ability to apply, the principles and practices of your discipline.
  • A thorough knowledge of the Mental Health Act (2014).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of recovery and collaborative clinical practice. 
  • The ability to facilitate admission and discharge process with medical staff and multidisciplinary team to be able to assist Inpatient Unit Transition Coordinator and Community Senior Clinicians/Shift Leaders to facilitate discharges back to community 
  • The ability to liaise with key stakeholders e.g. Supported Residential Services, Pharmacists and GPs, support APU Social Worker G3 position and APU Transition Coordinator 
  • Participate in service development by providing liaison, consultation and education services for other health care professionals, consumer and community groups and agencies.
  • This is a senior role that requires the individual to be operating at an autonomous level and to possess skills in escalating concerns, seeking solutions and in a timely manner.
