Position Summary

Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across 3 campuses in the northeast of Melbourne and state-wide. Austin Health is world-renowned for its research and specialist work in cancer, liver transplantation, spinal cord injuries, neurology, endocrinology, mental health and rehabilitation.

An exciting opportunity currently exists for an enthusiastic and highly experienced Research Nurse to join our Gastroenterology and Advanced Endoscopy Team. 

Austin Health is the largest health network provider of endoscopy services in the state. As such we provide a high-quality service across both The Surgical Centre (TSC) and Austin campuses. The Advanced endoscopy service provides both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy services and is staffed by three interventional consultants, two fellows (interventional and research) and supported by the endoscopy booking office and two dedicated advanced endoscopy booking nurses. The Clinical Research Nurse (CRN) will be expected to compliment these roles.

The Advanced Endoscopy unit is one of Australia’s leading centers for the endoscopic management of gastro-intestinal and hepato-pancreato-biliary diseases. We work within the Victorian center for Liver Transplantation and the national center for multi-visceral transplantation. The unit is a high volume endoscopy unit supporting H&M and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-Pancreatography (ERCP) on call, academic research and endoscopy education through the Train the Endoscopy Trainer program.

The unit performs high volume ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound (diagnostic and therapeutic EUS), endoscopic mucosal resection, Radio Frequency Ablation for Barrett’s oesophagus, small bowel enteroscopy and have recently commenced endoscopic submucosal dissection.

Details of position/position requirements

The CRN position is newly established to support the clinical trials conducted by the advanced endoscopy unit and is funded by industry grants and the Pancare foundation as part of the pancreas cancer screening program which Austin Health. The intention is to continue the position long-term with key areas of responsibilities are as follows;

  1. Clinical research projects and trials:  The CRN will participate in the planning, development and execution of clinical trials and other research conducted by the advanced endoscopy unit. This will include but not limited to single centre studies developed by the unit as well as participating multi centre national or international studies.

a)       Screening for pancreatic cancer in high-risk individuals: This is a study that has run at Austin Health as one of the recruitment sites in Australia. An updated version of this study will be commencing in 2021. The CRN will have several key functions in the trial until completion in the following manner:

  • Contact for patients who have enrolled into the study
    • Bookings will be managed by the advanced endoscopy nurses
    • Any specific medical questions or post procedure issues will be co-managed with the supervising medical staff (fellows/consultants)
    • Maintaining patient screening, identification logs, case reporting and study documentation
    • Support clinical staff in data collection – EUS data sheet, blood work, post op phone follow-up, patient questionnaire.
    • Oversight of data quality and timelines.

b)      Randomized control trials of oxygen delivery in endoscopy

  • Assist in running these two studies with both fellows
  • Liaise with booking staff to identify suitable patients ahead of time and ensure that the patient information and consent form have been sent to the patient (text link, email or mail)
  • Check a week ahead of time for which lists across both campuses suitable patients may have been booked and organize which study investigator is to recruit patients
  • Utilise Microsoft Teams to message anaesthetists, study investigators and endoscopists day prior about potential patients for recruitment to ensure that the treating anaesthestist is agreeable to participate.

c)       Bowel preparation studies

  • Lead investigator – Research fellow
  • Assist the research fellow  with recruitment, consent and delivery of equipment to participating patients.
  • Support data entry and liaising with participating patients and endoscopists
  1. Data Collection on Trial Participants: The CRN is the primary clinician co-ordinating the data collection from patients in clinical trials. The CRN will work together with the supervising consultant, interventional and research fellows in ensuring accurate and complete data collection.
  1. Research Ethics & Governance: The CRN will facilitate the writing and management of human research ethics & governance submissions. This will require a thorough understanding and developing a working relationship with the Austin Human Research Ethics and Governance Office. In addition, it is the CRN’s responsibility to keep track of all active and pre-submission studies involving the advanced endoscopy unit, and coordinate with the primary investigators in a timely submission of annual reviews, amendments and conclusion reports to the HREC. This is a key role for the CRN.
  1. Liaison with Research Centres: The CRN will, as required, liaise with CRNs and Research Officers from other participating trial sites to ensure consistent progression of clinical trials.
  1. Participation in Unit Clinical Meetings: The CRN must attend weekly unit meetings, audits and multi-disciplinary meetings.
