Position Summary

Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across 3 campuses in the northeast of Melbourne and state-wide. Austin Health is world-renowned for its research and specialist work in cancer, liver transplantation, spinal cord injuries, neurology, endocrinology, mental health and rehabilitation.

An exciting opportunity currently exists for an enthusiastic and highly motivated mental health clinician to join the Adolescent Inpatient Unit (AIPU) team at Austin Health. This position is a newly created role designed to enhance and extend the current therapeutic group program, including extending the hours of the group program into weekends.  

The ideal applicant will have experience running therapeutic groups with young people, a passion for enhancing the mental well being of young people, and a great sense of fun to bring to the role. 

This is a part time role working weekends and two weekdays (can be negotiated) and is a 12 month contract. 

Purpose of the role:

  • To coordinate and deliver a range of therapeutic group programs for young people and their carers/families on the unit across the weekend and two weekdays.  
  • To provide brief, therapeutic interventions and psychoeducation to young people and their carers/families upon recommendation from the wider treating team 
  • To provide an intake function, which involves coordinating referrals to the unit  

Details of role:

  • Collaborate with the AIPU leadership group to develop a therapeutic weekend program, including coordinating resource allocation to enable the group program to run and a process for evaluating its worth and effectiveness.
  • Provide therapeutic interventions for individuals and their carers/families on the ward including individual and group modalities. These will include those with a strong foundation in psychoeducation, therapeutic support and recovery.
  • Provide relevant brief therapeutic interventions to address areas such as distress tolerance, emotional resilience, problem solving, or other topics as requested by the treating team or consumers, as well as diversional areas such as art, craft, and movement.
  • Work with families and/or carers of young people referred to the unit to improve understanding of mental health and to assist with a smooth and safe discharge process
