Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across 3 campuses in the northeast of Melbourne and state-wide. Austin Health is world-renowned for its research and specialist work in cancer, liver transplantation, spinal cord injuries, neurology, endocrinology, mental health and rehabilitation.

An exciting opportunity currently exists for an enthusiastic and highly experienced Pathologist to lead our Pathology Department.

Details of Department

Austin Pathology provides comprehensive pathology services to all the campuses of Austin Health consistent with the needs of a university teaching hospital and the strategic directions of Austin Health. High volume tests and most complex low volume investigations are performed at the refurbished Austin Hospital laboratory using cutting edge technologies.

The service also operates in the community supported through a number of accredited collection centers to ensure patient access. Austin Pathology provides specialised testing to a number of external clients including other public and private pathology laboratories, and pathology services to the Mercy Hospital for Women.

The Department plays an important role in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and is closely affiliated with the clinical departments, University Of Melbourne and other institutes and universities.

The major areas of expertise of Austin Pathology include molecular diagnostics, thrombophilia testing, protein chemistry, neuropathology, hepatopathology and isolation and identification of antibiotic resistant pathogenic organisms.

Medical Director of Pathology

Fixed-Term Full Time (5 Years Initially)

Up to 0.5 EFT plus clinical load

The Medical Director of Pathology, in strong collaboration with the Director of Pathology, is responsible for clinical leadership, operational management and strategic development of the Department to achieve a high quality, co-ordinated and cost efficient range of patient services. Co-ordinating and leading the ongoing development and training of staff, especially vocational training, is a key component of this role.

This is a senior medical leadership role and the incumbent is expected to lead by example and demonstrate appropriate clinical and management acumen, continually seeking to promote and enhance the services provided by Austin Pathology. The Medical Director of Pathology will also be expected to maintain a clinical load to fulfil a full-time appointment.

Applicants must be eligible for full medical registration in Victoria and hold the Fellowship of The Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia, have extensive experience in a discipline of pathology including teaching, research, quality assurance and proven leadership, collaborative, organisational and management skills.

The successful appointee will be eligible for an additional honorary academic appointment within the University of Melbourne, the level and title to be determined by the University of Melbourne after consideration of the appointee's academic standing.

Key responsibilities:

In conjunction with the Director of Pathology, the Medical Director of Pathology will provide professional clinical and operational leadership for Austin Pathology; specifically:

  • Establish and direct the Pathology Department service strategies and capital plans, taking into account the external environment, the Austin Health strategic plan and policies, operational imperatives, and local clinical service requirements.
  • Create an environment that attracts and retains high quality staff at all levels, and provides them with challenging and rewarding work.
  • Provide clinical leadership and ensure that Austin Pathology staff are adequately supported to deliver high-quality services, and participate in other formal and informal service improvement activities.
  • Recruit and retain a high-quality medical workforce across Austin Pathology, and ensure appropriate rostering to meet service needs.
  • In conjunction with Austin Health Executive Directors, Austin Pathology Executive, and Austin Pathology discipline heads, set/review professional and clinical standards and policies for Austin Pathology staff.
  • Provide clinical governance leadership and direction across Austin Pathology services, and ensure Austin Pathology achieves and maintains NATA accreditation.
  • Develop and facilitate the setting of a balanced suite of safety/quality, operational, financial, and human resourcing performance targets and outcomes for Austin Pathology, with reference to relevant clinical/service standards and benchmarks.
  • Ensure sound financial performance and achieve agreed budget targets.
  • Promote and enact a performance based culture within the department, including the regular Performance Review & Development cycle
  • Actively promote and provide opportunities for education, teaching and professional development for all staff.
  • Actively encourage and foster research and development pertinent to the Austin Pathology.
  • Actively promote Austin Pathology and ensure an appropriate customer focus for all external clients.
