Position Summary

Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across 3 campuses in the northeast of Melbourne and state-wide. Austin Health is world-renowned for its research and specialist work in cancer, liver transplantation, spinal cord injuries, neurology, endocrinology, mental health and rehabilitation.

We are currently recruiting for 2 enthusiastic Paediatric Registrars to join our Paediatric Medicine Department in 2020 from February to August in 6 month advanced training accredited positions.

Details of Department

The Department of Paediatric Medicine is part of the Medical Services Division and is located at the Austin Hospital campus in Heidelberg. 

Austin Health is a paediatric teaching hospital providing secondary level General Paediatrics for our local population while supporting specialised services in the treatment of Eating Disorders and Diabetes. Austin Health also provides tertiary level Paediatric Epilepsy services who are cared for on the Paediatric Ward.

The Inpatient Paediatric Ward on 2West is a 16-bed unit comprising medical and surgical patients. Medical areas include general paediatrics, endocrine, epilepsy and eating disorders. Surgical areas include ENT, orthopaedics, plastics, ophthalmology and maxillofacial surgery.

The department runs 3-4 outpatient clinics per week focused on General Paediatrics & Eating Disorder patients. There are also fortnightly Diabetes clinics.The twelve month term gives the opportunity for the registrar to gain experience in longitudinal outpatient follow-up of patients with a variety of problems. Medical student teaching is also required.

The Paediatric Emergency Department is a 6 cubicle dedicated area with a paediatric procedure room. The department has 2 Resuscitation rooms which are equipped for both adult and paediatric presentations. The department sees approximately 18,000 paediatric presentations every year and is staffed with Paediatric Emergency Physicians, Paediatric Registrars and Emergency Registrars.

Details of position/position requirements

The Paediatric Registrars work as part of a team of 8 registrars, 6 of whom provide onsite night cover for the paediatric ward and paediatric emergency department.

The rotating roster includes 1:6 Nights, 1:6 Saturday Ward cover.

Registrars will be expected to assess and manage paediatric patients (up to 18 years old) in the Paediatric Inpatient Ward, in Paediatric Emergency and Short Stay Unit and outpatient clinics. 

To be successful in this role you must:

  • A commitment to Austin Health values
  • Registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) - (note eligible applicants will be assisted through this process).
  • Have appropriate training and experience applicable to the field of Paediatric Medicine
  • Demonstrated commitment to high quality patient care
  • Job sharing for the one year post may be considered. This position is accredited by the RACP for 12 months Paediatric Medicine Advanced Training, or continuing Basic Training.
  • Ability to participate in the roster for after hours and weekend cover if required.
