Position Summary

Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across 3 campuses in the northeast of Melbourne and state-wide. Austin Health is world-renowned for its research and specialist work in cancer, liver transplantation, spinal cord injuries, neurology, endocrinology, mental health and rehabilitation.

An exciting opportunity currently exists for an enthusiastic and highly experienced Communications Education and Campaigns Coordinator to join the North Eastern Public Health Unit.

The North Eastern Public Health Unit (NEPHU) is one of nine public health units in Victoria; three in metropolitan Melbourne and six covering regional Victoria. Together these units form a coordinated network, working in partnership with the Department of Health to deliver a comprehensive public health program for Victoria.

The NEPHU is led and coordinated by Austin Health and works in partnership with Northern Health and Eastern Health in a networked operational structure with responsibility spanning approximately 1.85m people living in the northeast of metropolitan Melbourne.

While NEPHU was initially focused on end-to-end COVID-19 case identification, contact tracing, outbreak management and community engagement, we are progressively taking on broader public health functions beyond COVID-19 in 2022, strengthening relationships with community-based partners. This is an exciting opportunity to help design a fresh, new, integrated approach to effective health protection, prevention and promotion activity and team building in the North Eastern region of metropolitan Melbourne.

The Communications Education & Campaigns Coordinator supports the creation, review, editing, publishing and coordination of high quality and accurate public health education and campaign content that meet NEPHU needs and standards. The role also contributes to the formulation, implementation and ongoing review of staff induction, training and broad education programs. The role collaborates with and supports teams across NEPHU and external stakeholder organisations to create compelling education and campaign products for a range of purposes that are clear, engaging and timely, and aligned to strategic plans. Communications material could include fact sheets, video, web content, materials for social media, presentations, events, course content (in-person and online delivery) and other campaign material.

Essential Knowledge and skills:

  • Tertiary qualification in health promotion, communications or related field.
  • Demonstrated writing and editing skills across a variety of mediums, including digital, with the ability to understand technical information and reproduce it into a form that is engaging and easy-to-understand.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal communication and relationship skills with proven ability to engage with diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to apply health literacy principles when developing materials and content.
  • Relevant experience in a communications role with experience in education and campaign development and execution (consumer and sector).
  • A flexible and agile ‘can-do’ attitude.
  • Proven ability and strong track record in efficiently managing tight deadlines and competing priorities.
  • Customer/client focus: listens to customers; actively seeks to meet customer needs; seeks ways to improve services; committed to delivering high quality outcomes for clients.
  • Detail focus: observes fine details. Identifies gaps in information; looks for logical sequences of information; highlights practical considerations of plans and activities.
  • Ability to use discretion, maintain confidentiality, and practice ethical conduct.

Desirable but not essential:

  • Demonstrated experience with web content management systems and tools (particularly WordPress), Adobe creative suite, Google Analytics and social media publishing and analytics tools.
  • Illustration skills and video production/editing skills.
  • Experience in instructional design, development of online training materials for learning management systems and/or adult learning principles.
