Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across 3 campuses in the northeast of Melbourne and state-wide. Austin Health is world-renowned for its research and specialist work in cancer, liver transplantation, spinal cord injuries, neurology, endocrinology, mental health and rehabilitation.

The Organisation

IBAS is a not-for-profit independent medical research institute located at the Austin Hospital campus of Austin Health. Internal affiliations include the Departments of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine, Intensive Care, Nuclear Medicine and Clinical and Health Psychology at Austin Health. IBAS also has diverse national and international affiliations including the University of Melbourne, Monash University, RMIT, and Swinburne University of Technology.

The Position

Due to the retirement of the current Executive Director, IBAS is seeking to appoint a suitably qualified, experienced and influential replacement. The Executive Director is accountable to the Board of Directors and is responsible for IBAS’s overall leadership and strategic management. The Executive Director will engage with the IBAS Board to drive IBAS’s development, implement its strategic direction, and oversee and direct research efforts to improve the quality and quantity of its research outcomes.

The Executive Director’s integral role is stakeholder engagement and relationship management, maintaining IBAS’s open and supportive atmosphere that encourages input from all.

This will be a hands-on role within a small team.

The Person

Do you have an affinity for medical research, a head for numbers, a heart for managing relationships, and both feet planted solidly in the research community? Are you able to produce reliable financial reports, while holding your own to lead a team of bright and brainy researchers, project staff, students, clinicians, and administrators who are working hard to improve the health and wellbeing of thousands with their studies into respiratory and sleep-based medicine and other related studies?

This is a perfect role for someone seeking work-life balance, with 0.4 EFT on offer over an initial two-year period. If you have financial acumen, research funding experience, and the drive and appetite to develop IBAS’s vision, we would love to hear from you and discuss the role and how you may be able to lead IBAS into the future.

You will have a natural ability to form, grow and maintain strong stakeholder relationships across all levels and experience in providing leadership in the not-for-profit sector, with exemplary strategic, financial and operational skills.

As the leader of the organisation, your responsibilities will also include:

· Ensuring long term sustainability and continuity of the organisation as an independent research institute;

· Providing strategic support, advice and recommendations to the Board of Directors;

· Ensuring the effective management of the organisation including business planning, financial management, human resources management, policy and governance functions;

· Producing monthly and annual financial reports for the Board and other regulatory and legislative bodies in a timely manner; and

· Leading change, innovation and continuous improvement in systems and work processes and practices.

Qualifications and experience

· Proven track record of scientific and administrative leadership in a research institute or higher education environment

· Previous experience in strategy development and implementation

· Demonstrated ability to build and maintain successful relationships with stakeholders in government, research, commercial and education organisations

· PhD or equivalent in a relevant discipline (desirable but not essential)

· Relevant tertiary accounting qualification or similar (desirable but not essential)
