A number of exciting opportunities are available for enthusiastic and highly experienced CONSULTANT PSYCHIATRISTS to join our Mental Health Division.

Austin Health's Mental Health Division incorporates a number of specialities and services across community and bed-based services, with inpatient beds located on all three campuses. The Division provides catchment-based area mental health services, in addition to a number of regional and state-wide specialty services.

The Mental Health Division supports the rights of consumers to receive treatment in the least restrictive environment possible and delivers care which is consistent with the objectives of the Victorian Mental Health Act 2014 and the National Standards for Mental Health Services. Service delivery is underpinned and supported by contemporary operational and clinical governance structures, and relevant policy and process.

You will be working with a team of professionals to make a difference to consumers impacted by mental health difficulties. Person centred care will be at the core of what you do, and the successful candidate will be guided by the Austin Health values.

1.  Triage (0.5 EFT)

The Triage service is the initial point of contact for clients, family, carers and other professional bodies who may be seeking advice or referral to mental health services.

This is an opportunity to provide clinical leadership in the front end of Austin Health and to work alongside those providing initial and emergency urgent mental health care. The role encompasses clinical governance to the Triage team as well as support to the PAPU and EPS teams and the opportunity to work in fast paced emergency environment and to provide clinical review, supervision and secondary consultation to both the mental health teams and a range of front end, primary care and secondary care services. The role is additional to existing consultant psychiatry and will augment existing capacity.


NE Triage provides telephone assessment, referral, support and advice for consumers who live in the City of Banyule and the Shire of Nillumbik and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It manages approximately 150 incoming calls per month. NE Triage is the single point of entry for referrals to any of the North East Area Mental Health Services. 


The service is staffed by clinicians employed within the Crisis Assessment and Treatment Service (CATS) during the day, and by the Psychiatric Assessment and Planning Unit (PAPU) overnight. These teams work alongside the Emergency Psychiatric Service (EPS) based within the emergency department, and the ED diversion program Police, Ambulance and Clinical Early Response team (PACER). 


The consultant will provide leadership and clinical governance to the team including team leader/NUM and be supported by the Clinical Director.

2.  Acute Psychiatric Unit (1.0 EFT)

The Acute Psychiatric Unit incorporates 3 mental health programs.

Adult Inpatient Program: 19 beds providing inpatient services to people over 18 years of age who have an acute psychiatric disorder requiring specialist intervention for assessment and treatment. The Unit has a strong integration with mental health community-based services supporting continuity of recovery-focused care.

Eating Disorder Program: five inpatient beds for consumers with an eating disorder, who require an acute health restoration program due to medical risk because of the severity of their eating problems.

Parent Infant Program: –This is a 6 bed program and is located adjacent to the AAP and EDP. The program provides specialised care for woman with a variety of mental health issues who have babies up to 12months of age.

3.  Community Care Service (1.0 EFT)

The CCS provides assessment, treatment and care to consumers in their local community through the provision of direct care services, case management, health promotion activities, monitoring of physical health, and by facilitating community reintegration and transition of care.  The service is located at the North East Area Mental Health Service at 77 Hawdon Street, Heidelberg.

 To be successful for this role you must: 

  • Be a registered Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • Hold a Fellowship of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), or equivalent
  • Have appropriate training and experience applicable to the field of Psychiatry
  • Demonstrate a commitment to high quality patient care
  • Demonstrate a commitment to working as a team member with peer medical, junior medical, nursing and other clinical staff to provide efficient, safe and quality care across the continuum, and
  • Demonstrate a commitment to teaching, training and research.
