Position Summary

Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across 3 campuses in the northeast of Melbourne and state-wide. Austin Health is world-renowned for its research and specialist work in cancer, liver transplantation, spinal cord injuries, neurology, endocrinology, mental health and rehabilitation.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified and enthusiastic medical practitioners to join our team as an Endoscopy Clinical and Research Fellow in the Gastroenterology Unit for the 2025 Clinical Year (commencing February 2025).  

Details of Department
The Austin Gastroenterology Unit provides expert care in the fields of luminal Gastroenterology, Hepatology, interventional Endoscopy, intestinal failure and hepatocellular carcinoma.

Emergency and inpatient services are based at Austin Hospital while outpatient services and endoscopy are based on the Austin Hospital and Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital.  In addition, a consultative service is provided for other Units within the health service.  The Unit maintains an ongoing commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

The Endoscopy service provided by the Gastroenterology Unit is the largest in the state, offering a weekly advanced Endoscopy outpatient clinic for complex referrals, in addition to routine gastroscopy, colonoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), ERCP and balloon enteroscopy.

A Gastroenterology physiology laboratory has recently been established to provide upper Gastrointestinal and anorectal manometry, pH studies, capsule endoscopy and Fibroscan.

Details of position requirements:

The objective of this position is to provide an Endoscopy Clinical and Research Fellow role to: 

  • Further training in Endoscopy, in particular Advanced Endoscopic techniques. 
  • Provide support and teaching to Resident and Registrar medical staff through direction and management of patients. 
  • Support emergency Endoscopy work. 
  • Perform quality research at Austin Health 
  • Assess and facilitate the introduction of endoscopic equipment and techniques.
  • Clinical and research development of the incumbent is a significant component of the role.
  • Provide an alternate pathway to the Endoscopy Fellow position.
  • Additional paid clinical work at DIT award rates

To be successful in this role you must:

  • Demonstrate a commitment to Austin Health values.
  • Have or be eligible for; Registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) - (note eligible applicants will be assisted through this process).
  • Have appropriate training and experience applicable to the field of Gastroenterology.
  • Dedication to delivering excellent service – to patients, all colleagues (nursing, medical, managerial, support staff), GPs and other contact points. 
  • Demonstrate a commitment to high quality patient care.
