About Psychiatry Training at Austin Health
The Mental Health Division at Austin Health offers registrars a comprehensive training in psychiatry through a broad range of learning experiences, in a supportive and collegiate working environment.

The Advanced Trainee in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry has a range of learning opportunities available to them, including rotations with liaison relationships with Austin Health’s many state-wide medical and surgical services, including the Liver Transplant Service, Epilepsy Service, Spinal Service and the Oliva Newton-John Cancer Centre.  External secondments are also available to the Mercy Hospital for Women.  Specific training experiences also exist within the Consultation-Liaison service to work with young people, the elderly, in addiction psychiatry and in the emergency department.  Austin Health is also home to a statewide neuropsychiatry service, offering inpatient and community support to sufferers of neuropsychiatric disorders, their carers and professional supports.  Our connected Functional Neurology Clinic is a unique learning experience supported by world expert Professor Richard Kanaan.  Finally, opportunities for leadership exist within the team, ideal for registrars nearing Fellowship.

The successful candidate also has access to Austin Health’s many other training experiences outside of the Consultation-Liaison team, including in parent-infant mental health, eating disorders, psychological trauma and addictions, with external secondments also available to a range of private services.

Austin Health trainees can also look forward to a collegiate, inclusive and supportive environment, which values trainee welfare, development and training success. Trainees have access to the required Consultation-Liaison education program, supported by senior medical staff, and the co-located University of Melbourne Department of Psychiatry. Specific educational programs also exist for junior trainees and for RANZCP examination candidates, as well as opportunities to be involved for research, medical student teaching and service leadership.

To be successful in this role you must:

  • Be an accredited Stage 3 Trainee in the RANZCP Fellowship Program, or a Specialist International Medical Graduate eligible for a RANZCP comparability placement.
  • Be accepted into the Advanced Training Certificate program for Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry
  • Have General Registration as an Australian Medical Practitioner with AHPRA
  • Be committed to a career in Mental Health, and a particular interest in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, backed up with appropriate clinical experience and a record of excellent clinical care;
  • Commitment to professional development, with interest in research and education;
  • Have above-average skills as a communicator and collaborator, with the ability to develop and maintain supportive therapeutic and professional relationships.
  • Recognise and value the diverse knowledge and experience of our consumers and carers.
