An exciting opportunity currently exists for an enthusiastic Upper GI Bariatric Surgical Fellow to join our Upper GI unit in 2019.

Details of Department

The Upper GI/Endocrinology Unit is part of the Division of Surgery, Anaesthesia & Procedural Medicine.  It is responsible for the provision of services within these specialties as well as general surgery to patients across Austin Health, situated at Austin Hospital and Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital.  The Head of Unit is Mr. Ahmad Aly

Details of position/position requirements

The position combines clinical opportunity for gaining experience in Bariatric surgery and multidisciplinary care of patients as well as General Surgery and Upper GI surgery and research.

The unit offers a comprehensive Bariatric surgery service encompassing gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass and revisional surgery.

Fellows will gain direct operative experience in the public sector and assist with Bariatric procedures in the private sector as well as participate in multidisciplinary care and follow up models across both sectors. It is expected the fellow would have exposure to 150-200 bariatric procedures over 12 months.

Research opportunities exist in clinical studies, quality assurance and audit as well as translational research collaborations. It is expected the successful candidate will complete at least one major clinical project suitable for publication and presentation at national or international meeting.

This is a full time salaried position at the Austin Hospital

To be successful in this role you must:

  • Demonstrate a commitment to Austin Health values.
  • Be a registered Medical Practitioner in Australia.
  • Hold a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or its equivalent.
  • Exhibit an interest and have experience in upper GI surgery, and be wishing to enhance bariatric surgical experience
