Position Summary

About the department: 

Austin Health has completed Renal Transplantation since 1974, and over 1000 transplants have now been performedWe currently perform approximately 75 renal transplants per year, including 20 live donor transplants. 

Austin Health is the provider of transplantation surgery to several other services as part of the Victorian Kidney Transplant Collaborative (VKTC), which offers live and deceased transplantation surgery to non-transplanting Renal Hub Services. including Eastern Health, Barwon Health, Bendigo Health and St Vincent’sSince 2013, Austin Health has provided adult donor nephrectomy surgery and involving paediatric transplantation at Royal Children’s HospitalPaediatric transplants are performed at the Royal Children’s Hospital, with 50 paediatric transplants performed in the last 5 years. 

The unit has had a keen involvement with the Australian and New Zealand Kidney Exchange since its origins in 2010Austin Health also plays a highly active role in the retrieval of deceased donor kidneys, owing to the Statewide Liver Transplant Service being located at Austin Health. 

About the role: 

An exciting opportunity currently exists for an enthusiastic Renal Transplant Surgery Fellow at Austin Health to begin in February 2025. This Fellowship position will provide further training in all components of Renal Transplant Surgery. 

To be successful in this role you must: 

  • Exhibit a commitment to Austin Health values. 
  • Hold appropriate registration as a Medical Practitioner in Australia. 
  • Have a Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or its equivalent. 
  • Have appropriate training and experience applicable to the field of Renal Transplant Surgery with demonstrated surgical competency. 
  • Demonstrate a commitment to high quality patient care. 
  • Have proven capability and interest in clinical research. 
  • Exhibit a commitment to teaching of junior medical staff and surgical trainees. 
  • Be able to communicate at all levels. 
  • Have well developed teamwork and collaboration skills.
