Position Summary

Austin Health is the major provider of tertiary health services, health professional education and research across 3 campuses in the northeast of Melbourne and state-wide. Austin Health is world-renowned for its research and specialist work in cancer, liver transplantation, spinal cord injuries, neurology, endocrinology, mental health and rehabilitation.

An exciting opportunity currently exists for enthusiastic Paediatric Medicine Registrars to join our Department of Paediatric Medicine in 2019.

Details of Department

The Department of Paediatric Medicine is part of the Medical Services Division and is located at the Austin Hospital campus in Heidelberg. 

Austin Health is a paediatric teaching hospital and provides specialist services in Eating Disorders, Diabetes and Epilepsy in addition to secondary level General Paediatrics for our local population.

The Inpatient Paediatric Ward on 2West is a 16-bed unit comprising medical and surgical patients. Medical areas include general paediatrics, endocrine, epilepsy and eating disorders. Surgical areas include ENT, orthopaedics, plastics, ophthalmology and maxillofacial surgery.

The Paediatric Emergency Department treats approximately 18,000 paediatric patients per year.

Details of position/position requirements

This 6 month post comprises general paediatric medicine, giving the opportunity for the registrar to gain experience in longitudinal outpatient follow-up of patients with a variety of problems.

Medical Officers will be expected to assess and manage only paediatric patients (up to 18 years old) in the Paediatric Inpatient Ward on 2West, in Paediatric Emergency & Short Stay Unit and outpatient clinics. 

This position is accredited for Advanced training in General Paediatrics

Essential for Performance in the Position   

  • A commitment to Austin Health values 
  • Registered as a Medical Practitioner in Australia
  • Minimum two years' experience in Paediatrics. This position is particularly suited to those individuals training in Paediatrics who wish to maintain or improve their skills in general paediatrics and acute care. Experience in neonatal medicine is essential.
  • Job sharing for the 6 month post may be considered. This position is accredited by the RACP for 6 months Paediatric Medicine Advanced Training, or continuing Basic Training.
  • All applicants must have a valid Working with Children Check.
Desirable but not essential for Performance in the Position   
  • A sound understanding of information technology including clinical systems and applications relevant to the Management of rostering and risk management reporting or as required for the role and/or department.
